There isn’t one right answer, it depends on the room
Curtains and blinds solve slightly different problems, which is why most homes we measure end up with a mix rather than one or the other throughout. Treating it as a single house-wide decision is usually where people get stuck.
Roller blinds and Venetian blinds give precise, minute-by-minute control over light and privacy, roll down, tilt open, done. Curtains give softness, warmth and a finished look to a room, but day-to-day light control is more binary: open or closed.
Light control and privacy
If you want to adjust light through the day, a sunscreen roller blind or Venetian wins easily, you can dial it in without fully blocking the view. Curtains are more of an all-or-nothing option unless you’re running sheers underneath a heavier drape, which gives you a middle setting.
Insulation and energy use
A well-made blockout blind helps, but a floor-length curtain, especially with a pelmet box to seal the top, generally out-performs blinds for keeping a room warm in winter and cooler in summer. If insulation is the main driver for a particular room, curtains (or honeycomb blinds) usually get the nod over a standard roller or Venetian.
Cleaning and upkeep
Blinds are lower-maintenance day to day, a wipe or vacuum handles most of it. Curtains need more care, some fabrics are dry-clean only, and they collect dust in a way that’s less visible than a blind until you look closely. In a kitchen or bathroom, we’ll almost always recommend blinds over curtains for exactly this reason.
Our honest, room-by-room take
Living areas and bedrooms: curtains, or a curtain-and-blind combination, for the warmth and finished look.
Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries: blinds, for moisture resistance and easy cleaning.
Home offices and media rooms: Venetians or a blockout roller blind, for precise light control without glare on screens.
