What each one actually does

Zipscreen outdoor blinds run vertically in a track, sealing the full side of an alfresco area from wind, rain and sun, effectively turning it into an extra room. A folding arm awning extends horizontally out from the wall, shading the area underneath without enclosing the sides.

Wind and weather protection

This is the biggest practical difference for a coastal Geelong property. Zipscreens, because they’re tracked on both sides, hold firm in wind that would have a folding arm awning retracted for safety. If your patio catches the prevailing wind off the bay, a zipscreen is generally the more usable option through more of the year.

How much shade and enclosure you actually want

A folding arm awning is the better fit if you want shade without fully closing the space in, it keeps sightlines and airflow while cutting direct sun. A zipscreen suits someone who wants to genuinely extend usable living space, blocking rain and wind, not just sun.

Motorisation

Both can be motorised, and for a zipscreen especially, motorisation is worth the extra spend, manually zipping a full-width screen up and down gets old fast. See our motorised options page for the brands we install.

Can you have both?

Plenty of Geelong homes do, a folding arm awning on the sunniest side for shade, and a zipscreen on the windward side for wind and rain protection. We’ll walk your actual outdoor space with you on a free measure and quote and give you a straight recommendation rather than upselling both by default.
